This is a question that I am sure a lot of you have asked yourself or somebody else or even Google! It really is down to your personal circumstance and what you would like to gain from your property, but let me share another idea with you.

This one comes from my personal viewpoint…

I always try to look at the bigger picture. How long do we have on this planet and what would I like to do during this time?

When we were purchasing our first property Tom asked me, ‘how do you feel about buying this, renovating and selling straight away?’. Now, I absolutely understand where he was coming from and being in the business we are in it did make sense, HOWEVER, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the upheaval could potentially have a negative affect on us as a family. Was it worth it, just to make a bit of extra money?

How long do we have on this planet and what would I like to do during this time?

For me, the answer was no.

We had already waited so long to get on the property ladder having invested all our time and money into a business. I was protective of the ‘ideal’ within my head that the opportunity would allow us to put some roots down and allow the children (and us) some stability in their surroundings.

So, although we knew we could make money on the property by renovating and selling we made the decision to renovate and stay for at least 5 years then move on.

We now have a home that works for us all.

Everything is new even though we are in an old shell of a Victorian house. It is ideal and ticks so many boxes for us. Really this had to come before the prospect of making money on a property. Yes property prices may fluctuate over the years but we only get to live once and I would prefer to do that in the calmest way possible.

Our next plan is to buy some land and build a home. We may have to wait longer than if we had purchased and sold a few properties between now and then but at least we will be relaxed and ready for the experience when it is eventually possible to commit to! Money aside, I think renovating and improving space is always worth it. To have a home where you feel comfortable and safe will have a huge impact on your life in general.

Money aside, I think renovating and improving space is always worth it.
