Have you ever seen that advert for Coke showing you a journey through a vending machine into a crazy fantasy world of characters and landscapes that all contributes to the delivery of one bottle to a guy who stuck a quid in the machine? He doesn’t see any of that stuff happen, he’s just thirsty. Well that’s exactly (sort of) what happens when you contact Olive and Umber (loosely).

Your O&U adventure can be summed up in a few bullet points:

  • Relationship
  • Design
  • Logistics

From the moment a client contacts us at O&U our lovely office team springs into action, making sure that we understand the type of project you’re looking to embark on and, more importantly, making sure that we’re a good fit for each other.
We’ll organise a lockdown favourite Zoom call and go through what it is you need from us and what it is that we’ll be bringing to the table to help you achieve your vision. We’ll then start working on the estimate, which you’ll be able to look over and present any feedback to us that you might want to highlight or query. When you’ve decided you’re happy with everything so far, we’ll look at organising a socially distanced site visit, your comfort throughout this process is just as important as your project, so we make sure to adapt our operation accordingly. This gives us the perfect chance to tour the property and really get a feel for your concept. Then comes the contract signing, which is such an exciting step because this leads on to my favourite bit, design day!

Design day is when we’ll get into the nitty gritty and look at an abundance of samples, mood boards or whatever you have that you think is the best way to express your style. I’m very partial to a good Pinterest board myself and definitely have a camera roll filled with inspo screenshots too! We’ll also be taking you through the step by step strategy, discuss any changes you might want to make because communication is absolutely the key. We have a mantra at O&U which is “good projects made great” and we can only achieve that with the power of collaboration, we need to know what you want and how you want it. A common misconception about hiring a contractor is that people feel like they have to relinquish control of their project and this is simply not true! You can have as much or as little involvement in the project as you want! If you feel like you’re not being listened to, I would definitely recommend scheduling a meeting with your contractor or site manager – whoever you feel most confident with and let them know how you’re feeling and what you’d like to change, they’re not scary I promise. You take those reigns back!

Now we’re at a stage where we put some of the spotlight on our operations team and start thinking more logistically. We’ll need to plan exactly what it is we’ll be needing on site from day one all the way until completion. Next up is site prepping because the big day is getting close! We’ll being to look through our extensive catalogue of trusted subcontractors and negotiate their scheduling to make sure they’re ready and on site when we need them to be, from tilers when we’re at the stage of working on your bathroom to an electrician to wire up the kitchen, we really do have a contact for any job. Around this time is when we’ll get busy sourcing any items that we know we’ll be needing. Taking direction from your design day, we can pre-order a lot of the materials, appliances and fixtures ready for when the time comes for installation.

While it’s not to say that these are the only steps that we’ll be working on, I hope that it has given you a bit of an idea of what we do even when you’re not looking. At O&U we try to make your journey to your vision as easy as we can by taking care of a few things behind the scenes so you won’t need to even think about them.
