Where do I begin when renovating my house.

Renovating your home is a huge decision, not matter the size of the project, it’s going to affect members of the household one way or another, so it’s good to do a bit of research before jumping in head first.

If this is your first foray into home refurbishment, then it can also be a little bit confusing and begs the question ‘Where do I begin?’, which is a very valid question to ask! And your answer is, right here!
There are really two routes you can go down, one involves getting in contact with an architect to have plans drawn up before speaking with contractors and the second, which is what we’ll be looking at in more detail today, is considering working with a company that offers a package which allows you to hand the project to them and they’ll do most of the heavy lifting for you. It means you’re more dealing with one single party for the majority of the time and they’ll handle the project as a whole, rather than coordinating your time between multiple parties.
To make this a little easier, lets take a look at the first two steps you need to take when thinking about renovating your house.
Step 1:
What type of work are you looking to have done? Is it a full ground up renovation? Are you just looking to have your kitchen redone? The size and scope of the project is a vital piece of information that any contractor is going to know from you. It’s also going to help you figure out which contractors to contact.
Step 2:
Now that you know how much of your home you want to be renovated, it would be worth putting some thought into how you want the final outcome to look. We wouldn’t expect you to have every decision nailed down but a general idea of what you want would be beneficially to you and the design team! Mood boards are perfect for this kind of thing! If you see anything on Instagram, Pinterest or whilst flipping through magazines, keep a copy for future reference when you need a bit of inspiration.
Now that you’ve got a basic feeling of what you’re after, you can start looking at contractors, specifically ones who offer the package we mentioned earlier. Taking Olive & Umber as an example, our flagship offering is our Design & Build service, they are the projects we enjoy doing the very most and also allow us to really flex our skills in every aspect of the project.
With Design & Build, it is really aimed at those that don’t yet have any architect plans and are the very beginning of their journey. It was service that was developed because we kept hearing whispers that people found the prospect of getting the ball rolling on a home revocation project really quite daunting. While there are reasons that exist for why you shouldn’t proceed with a refurbishment project, feeling nervous or anxious about getting it started shouldn’t be one of them!
By cutting down the process at the beginning, we’ve been able to encourage people to make those initial steps into getting the project started, which absolutely the main outcome of why we started this offering.
We thought it might be helpful to take you through the process for our Design & Build clients:

Yes, all good projects begin with a consultation period, this is helpful to make sure that we’re a good fit for each other. It’s super important to start building on that relationship from the early stages!
